EDGARTOWN, MA – From the sounds of sleigh bells and parade cheers, the smell of freshly baked treats and laughter as candy falls from the air, Christmas in Edgartown is just about the most magical experience one can imagine to ring in the holiday season.
Normally referred to as a “ghost town” in the off season due to the island’s quiet nature as the last leaves of fall hit the ground, the small harbor side town opens up its doors in a burst of cheer that reminds all who love the island what the true spirit of giving – and community – looks like. Supporting over 40 nonprofits from Stuff-A-Bus to the Red Stocking Fund and Island Autism, the free town-wide celebration every year on the second week of December is one you have to see to believe.
“Whether they’re being hosted by a local business as a pop up, or have their own events, we typically see at least $50,00 going back in to the community,” explains Erin Ready, Executive Director of the Edgartown Board of Trade.
With over 100 different pop-up celebrations surrounding the festivities, the 43rd annual event offered something for everyone to celebrate the holiday season in their own perfect way. “We have Candy Cane Lane over here, the parade of course, pictures with Santa – there’s a pub crawl that started on Thursday, we have a Santa fun run. So wether you’re looking to stay fit and active or enjoy the food scene, there’s really something to choose from regardless of what you’re hoping to get out of the weekend.”
From tractor rides at Morning Glory Farm or alpaca snuggles at Island Alpaca, a wine pull to benefit the Boys & Girls’ Club or competing in the “best holiday fit” competition, the pet and family friendly festival is one well worth the trip.
