MARTHA’S VINEYARD – As the last week of August began to slip away, flocks of music lovers descended on the small island of Martha’s Vineyard to see fan favorites like Bon Iver, Mumford & Sons, Crooked Coast, and Regina Spektor.
Though on its face Beach Road Weekend was a music festival bringing in thousands from all over the country, underneath it all was the mission of the Vineyard Arts & Culture Foundation. Dedicated to supporting island-based arts, education and recreation initiatives, 100% of net proceeds fund MVY initiatives. Over the last year, VACF has supported the New Tisbury Elementary School, LadyFest and Connect to End Domestic Violence, Camp Jabberwocky, MV Community Services, and more.
What’s the vibe: A sun-kissed weekend on the iconic island of Martha’s Vineyard taking in local cuisine, shopping small businesses and enjoying tropical refreshments while being serenaded by live performances.
Woven into the festival’s framework were several opportunities to give back at nearly every booth. From grabbing a cocktail at Gray Whale Gin in support of their Ocean Love marine conservation initiative, to giveaways in support of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services or merch at the non-profit radio station MVY Radio – it was easy to have fun and give back.
Though some in the local community were skeptical about the festival’s sheer scale, the amount given back to island-owned businesses was nearly immeasurable. With island staples like Back Door Donuts, Cottage City Oysters and Taco Haven all on site, a true taste of the Vineyard wasn’t hard to find.
